Immersion
I was not the daring amphibian
Who marched triumphantly onto land
I breathed through gills
Until water abandoned me
Floundering in a prehistoric puddle
Dreaming of immersion
I grew lungs in paroxysms
To mediate the abyss
And take in the Other
In rhythmic desperation
In this cowardly way,
I spilled into the world
And the one who answered
Sunk into my need.
