Cinderella's Shoes
Cinderella's shoes never fit anyone
unless the prince married a frog, no
maybe he knew who she was all along, remembered
the feeling of her hand or the light in her eyes or how
that smile could make him remember and forget
at once, or maybe he chose someone else, maybe
he never saw her again but
married a princess who deceived him into thinking
that this love was the same
as that one, maybe
he stood in his castle by the sea and listened
to breaking salt water and a wind
filled with leaves and birds
that pretended to be wild
and confused himself into thinking
he had it all.
