Nelson
I saw him once,
Our Captain. Well,
his shiny boots anyway.
Nothing like my roughshod feet.
He came to inspect the provisions, stromping about.
I didn't look much past the boots –
their shine seemed to hold me.
His voice was daintier than I expected –
not the salt-licked vocals of us long at sea,
more like a seapearl that had a mind to come aboard
and walk the decks.
