Linda Conroy
Street Smart
Starkness of the highway ramp
gleams gold in dusk's distortion
as Eve, in faded beauty, steps
to situate herself between her door
and his. She knows the truth,
the way it is. She gives compassion
one last chance.
The amber glow of warmth
about her face softens scars
that crease its length. She wonders
if he'll still love what he sees
in fading spectrum's half-lit text
late on this winter afternoon
between one lamplight and the next.
