Anthony Lawrence has published fifteen books of poems, the most recent being 'Headwaters' (Pitt Street Poetry, 2016), which won the 2017 Prime Minister's Award for Poetry. A selection from his previous work, '101 Poems,' is forthcoming from Pitt Street Poetry in 2018. His poems have been published in Poetry (Chicago), Green Mountains Review, River City and Antipodes. He is a Senior lecturer at Griffith university, Queensland, where he teaches Writing Poetry and Creative Writing.

Wind

What it carries remains outside
comprehension, as when
a branch has worn a groove
in the bark of another
and we hear, as it turns
contained hysteria
in wood-worked vowels
to memory in thrall
to the elements, the voice
of someone loved
and long since gone
to memorial, a bequeathment
we've been gifted
as scars in musical, living timber.
