Fencepost calves in ballet slippers
walked in second position down the car,
Harrods bag bulging other, inner bags
and folded papers, possibly for cats.
Her cotton clothes bespoke a laundry basket
and her hummocky shoulders rode below a mole-hair chin,
a thatchy lip, a hand-pushed nose
and, deep within her face,
more than eggshell brittle grey,
her unescorted eyes like Appomattox.
