Out Of The Way Place

A little juke-joint in a forgotten borough.
Where the sunset goes at the end of a long day,
demented jazz playing into the demon-hours,
fallen angels serving us our black wine,
women with the heads of horses bringing us
dishes of meat, platters of sun-fattened strawberries,
moving with just a hint of what it is to be divine,
of what it means to be in the service of the infinite.

My fellow metaphysicians, enter, if you will,
a roadside inn outside of space and time,
discordant voices arguing in its back kitchen,
incense and perfume performing their heady dance,
the goat-footed proprietor counting souls like money.
Unashamed in his nakedness.
