Dorothy Schultz
The Dark
Everything feels worse at night—
the dark collects noiselessly
on the window pane
as if to imitate mice on tiptoe
circumnavigating my bed
brandishing sewing needle swords
and barbed wire spools
of thread
they march
I feel them wrap my fingers first and then
move onto
my wrists
my throat
They say you listen longer
They say you look harder
when you cannot see
