Kaye Bartholomew
Halfway Home
Teeth clamp a wet cigar
as he jacks up the car,
face a hard shine.
We sit in the backseat,
roll down windows,
feet on our collie's back.
Mom stands in the road
and leafs through Life,
blots of pink on her cheeks
as we split a stick
of Doublemint and
peel back the foil, told
to be quiet and wait.
