On the acoustic suppression of flame
Fire can be stilled by a rumbling wave
of sound. Conversely, a whisper
can flare a slumbering ember.
And I have been there in the moment
after, when the blaze was hushed
and every tongue was silenced.

Andrew Schep grew up in Ottawa, Canada, and lives in Syracuse, New York, with his wife and five kids, where he serves as a Presbyterian minister, sings in the Oratorio Society, and studies poetry at the Downtown Writers Center.
