"... brevity is the soul of wit ..."

The Sidelines of Riverview Park

"It's impulse to forget this"
carved a gentleman's tongue,
his jargon made it inept for
routine talk; he wonders with

crooked veins, crossed
between grey sprigs
above a freckled scalp.

I had not prepared to pucker his
purpose, but without search
I watched each eye tunnel
from woman to woman,

pillar to light post,
both pupils reaching inward
through their own webs,
still unable to shift,
size, shape.
