Get Well Flowers
Yellow and white daisies,
red roses, purple asters,
white carnations choke
the room where my daughter
breathes, eyes shut, below towers
hung with IV bags on slow drip:
bouquets speared with tridents
that clasp notes scrawled
in all the hieroglyphics for "live!"
flowers cut off at the base,
their rigid stems
suspended in clear, cold water.
My poetry has been published in journals such as Mid-American Review, Rocky Mountain Review, Ekphrasis, and Midwest Quarterly. My book Oneota Flow, a natural history of the Upper Iowa, was published in 2009 by University of Iowa Press. I teach and work in Decorah, Iowa.
