Sterling Warner
Beach Boardwalk Carousel

We set aside bags of popcorn, passed sticky cones of
cotton candy to local transients
who survived on scraps
found under
seats and
trash
cans.

Our
feet
leaped up
the painted
carousel; I jumped
the black stallion while my siblings
preferred white Arabians; lights blinked, the platform rolled.

Tink-tink-tink-ta-tink of mallets struck xylophone keys
as band organs orchestrated
ineffable yet
familiar
circus
sand
tunes.

Brass
notes
wailed, flutes
fluttered time
like tropical winds
murmuring through frons, vibrating
spores-magically, memorably as whistling Clowns.
