Cancer Pyramid

Dungeness crab atop a lounge
of mixed sugar kelp,
sea lettuce,
eel grass
beds,
till
the
lone
inert
crustacean's
protruding eyestalks
rise like periscopes, enhance sight
five pairs of long legs
tucked under
the shell,
prone
to
stand,
walk
sideways,
glide along
warm estuaries,
bubbling saltwater bottoms like
ocean jacuzzis—
a Cancer
retreat—
where
it
feasts
upon
plankton, clams,
scavenged morsels, ere
I catch, boil, & crack its armor.
