Three Tchaikovsky Poems
2. The Baroness

What
did
she love
that evening?
The man or his art?
We're together in harmony,
she wrote, the rich widow and the bachelor genius.
Those brave piano chords, macho fortissimo, opened the piece, her heart and her purse.
She kept this passion pure – not risking the erotic.
Tchaikovsky and the Baroness,
romantic pen pals.
Illusions
preserved.
Bills
paid.

Baroness Nadezhda von Meck (1831 - 1894) was a rich Russsian heiress
and patron of the arts. She supported the composer Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky
financially for 13 years after hearing a performance of his Piano Concerto No. 1.
They corresponded regularly but never met.
